Sleeping Bags

Most of us have great childhood memories of heading out into nature with our sleeping bag. Nature may have only been the backyard or our friend's bedroom, but it still seemed like the greatest adventure of all. Sleeping bags used to be pretty simple - they were a sack made of warm material - that was it. And as far as most kids were concerned, that was enough.

Nowadays, however, technology has caught up with the humble sleeping bag, just as it has with most things. Technology like amazing fibers that can be squeezed into tiny carrying bags but keep you warm in subzero degrees, specialized bag shapes and zippers to keep out the cold, and the list goes on. For kids, no more boring navy blue sleeping bags - now you can choose your favorite superhero to keep you warm at night.

As adults, a sleeping bag is a necessity if you plan to go camping. You might have outgrown your favorite superhero sleeping bag, but you still need some sort of sleeping bag to keep you warm on those cold nights. Even on warmer nights it's a good idea to have a sleeping bag, just in case nature wants to get a little bit closer than you'd like. Mind you, I've yet to see a sleeping bag with a mosquito net attached.

Walking into a camping store can be quite mind-boggling. There are so many different styles and designs of sleeping bags, it's hard to know which one to choose. Probably the first thing you need to decide has nothing to do with a sleeping bag. Instead, you need to think about where you're most likely to be camping. In a tent or outdoors? Warm climate or sub-zero temperatures?

Once you know the type of conditions you'll be using your sleeping bag in, you can start to look at the right ones. For some enthusiastic campers, it may even be necessary to own more than one sleeping bag, so that you can choose the right one each time you go on a camping trip. For really cold conditions, you might want to skip the traditional rectangular sleeping bag and go for something shaped to fit your body, such as a mummy bag. You also need to make sure the sleeping bag fill and material are rated sub-zero, so that you don't end up freezing during the night.

If you're mostly a summer camper, then you will want a looser sleeping bag, probably the old rectangular design, with filling designed for warmer nights. Most people, unless they're likely to be camping in extreme conditions on a regular basis, can usually get away with these two main types of sleeping bag.

Another thing you need to consider is how you're going to be transporting your sleeping bag. If you plan to drive to most of your camping spots, and can just get your stuff out of the back of your car, then it's probably not going to matter how compactable your sleeping bag is, or how much it weighs. But if you do a lot of hiking and will need to carry your sleeping bag in your pack, these factors become vital. So again, think about how you expect to utilize your sleeping bag so that you can make the right choice.

Shopping for quality sleeping bags doesn't need to be a big drama. It's probably best to stick with stores that specialize in camping supplies, unless you really only want a cheap, general-purpose sleeping bag. One of the good things about shopping in outdoors stores is that the staff are often keen on camping, and so know a lot about what type of sleeping bag is best for different types of conditions. So make sure you ask lots of questions, and you'll be able to select the right sleeping bag for your needs.

Of course, you can also shop online for sleeping bags. Sometimes if you're looking for something highly specific, this is the best way to go. Not all stores are going to be able to carry every single available sleeping bag as part of their range. So shopping online gives you the ability to see everything that's available. Try manufacturer sites, or check out some customer review sites and see what other people have to say about the sleeping bags on your shortlist.
